Naropa (d. 1040) was an Indian mahasiddha considered by the Kagyu tradition to be one its early lineage-masters - the second in a line of human teachers. His main teacher was the mahasiddha Tilopa. Naropa's Buddhist training began when he joined Nalanda - the greatest Buddhist university of all time. Eventually he became a great scholar, faultless debater, and a dean of the university. But it wasn't until he finally left his prestigious position and was accepted as a disciple by Tilopa that Naropa became a realized master himself. His most famous Tibetan disciple was Marpa who brought Naropa's tradition back to Tibet.
